The Courageous Follower by Ira Chaleff

The subtitle of this book identifies the key to what it means to be a courageous follower: 'standing up to and for our leaders'. In essence, Chaleff says that good leaders need courageous followers, people who will actively engage with their leadership rather than passively follow.

In modern business, people increasingly have to play the role both of leader and follower with real skill. The importance of courageous 'followership' lies in the ability to dynamically support but also to challenge leaders with constructive honesty.

Partnership between leaders and followers

The model of courageous followership offers the possibility for people to speak with integrity and be given appropriate consideration. The ultimate decision lies with the leader, with the respectful input of others being taken into account. This, Chaleff suggests, offers a developmental pathway for leaders and followers to create a reciprocal way of working together in service of the organisation's overall purpose.

The job of effective followers

Effective followers have three key qualities, according to Chaleff. Firstly, to understand their power and how to use it, bearing in mind that people actually have more influence than they often recognise. Secondly, to appreciate the value of the leader and work to support their strengths in support of the organisation. Thirdly, to help the leader to remain on track for the highest purpose of the business, having the courage to challenge with integrity where they see power being used inappropriately.

The 5 dimensions of courageous followership - Having the Courage to:

  1. Assume responsibility - taking ownership of their contribution with action
  2. Serve - backing up and being as passionate as the leader about their purpose
  3. Challenge - being willing to voice disagreement truthfully and respectfully
  4. Participate in transformation - championing the need for change
  5. Take moral action - willingness to take a stand that opposes that of the leader

“Leaders rarely use their power wisely or effectively over long periods unless they are supported by followers who have the stature to help them do so.”
